A glossary of general expressions used in the BJD hobby

Expressions used for activities involving BJD’s
(Body) blushing | Applying a natural looking blush with pastels or airbrushing to your doll’s body | |
Coating | Applying protective spray to (the paint on) your doll | |
Customization | This involves anything you can and want to change about the doll, for instance: wig, eyes, optional parts, sanding seams, painting, coating with a protective spray, etc. | |
Aesthetic | This term is used to sum up all the various types of customization, but is generally used for painting | |
Faceplate | For some dolls, this is the part of the doll’s head with the face which attached to the headback | |
Face-up | This refers to the facial paint / make-up of the doll | |
Headback | For some dolls, this is the part of the doll’s head that attaches to the faceplate | |
Headcap | This is the top part of your doll’s head, which can be taken off to access the eyes and the hook that holds the string together | |
Modding | This usually involves more drastic customization / modification such as drilling earring holes, sanding the face plate to alter shapes, etc. | |
MSC | Mr. Super Clear | This is a brand of protective spray coating. You use this spray to coat your paint and protect the doll from UV-rays and dirt (among other things). It comes in different types such as clear, glossy and UV. |
(Re) stringing | To restring means to take an elastic cord and string your doll with it. This action is often necessary after cleaning, painting or other actions | |
S-hook | These are the metal hooks used for doll’s heads, sometimes feet and hands | |
Sanding | The sanding of the seam lines that are sometimes visible after casting or altering the shape of your doll | |
Sealing | Applying protective spray to (the paint on ) your doll | |
Sueding | To line joints with suede (although it can also refer to hot glue or silicone being used). This is done to provide more stability for posing | |
Testors/Testors DC | This is a brand of protective spray coating. You use this spray to coat your paint and protect the doll from dirt (among other things) | |
Wig velcro | This is actually stick-on velcro which can be attachted to the head and inside of the wig to insure it stays on. | |
Wiring | To insert rubber/vinyl coated wire into the limbs (arms & legs) of your doll for better posing |

DP | Dollfie Plus | A 30 cm ABS doll line by Volks |
Dollfie | Doll + Figure | This refers to the pose ability of the dolls, which make them a crossbreed between traditional dolls and action figures. |
MSD | Mini Super Dollfie | Mini Super Dollfie are made by Volks. MSD are roughly 40 cm tall, or 1/4 of an average human. |
SD | Super Dollfie | Super Dollfie are resin ball jointed dolls made by Volks. The term is often used to let people know the general size of a doll, even if it wasn’tmade by Volks officially. |
SDC | Super Dollfie Cute | Super Dollfie Cute are made by Volks. They are about the size of MSD, but with a more mature body. |

SD10 | Super Dollfie 10 | SD10 are roughly 56-58 cm tall, or 1/3 of an average human. They are said to look about 10 years old. |
SD13 | Super Dollfie 10]3 | SD13 are roughly 60 cm tall, or 1/3 of an average human. They are meant to look about 13 years old. They have high-heel styled feet and a more mature, slender body. |
SD16 | Super Dollfie 16 | SD13 are roughly 62-65 cm tall, or 1/3 of an average human. They are meant to look about 16 years old. They have high-heel styled feet and a mature, slender body. |
YoSD | Young Super Dollfie | YoSD are roughly 26 cm tall, or 1/6 of an average human. They are meant to look like toddlers. |
Yo Tenshi | Young Tenshi | YoSD are roughly 26 cm tall, or 1/6 of an average human. They look like little angels. |
Rei Tenshi | These are the smallest dolls by Volks so far. They look like little angels. | |
Sei Tenshi | Smaller than Yo Tenshi. They have a non-jointed torso and look like little angels. | |
Unoss | U-noss are made by Volks, but sculpted by Araki Gentarou ( Alechemic Labo Unoa ). They are roughly 60 cm tall, or 1/3 of an average human. They have a sexier, slender body, not like the SD13. | |
Oldskin | The skin color they used on older dolls | |
Pureskin | The skin color they are currently using | |
FCS | Full Choice System | You can choose (for the largest part) your own parts and style and Volks creates the doll especially for you. |
