Galaxy room diorama 1/6 scale

Published by LunarReverie on

One of the rooms in my display cabinet is the galaxy room diorama in 1/6 scale. This nebula dream themed miniature apartment serves as a bedroom. Although it’s main function is as a living room for my gamer girls. The room has a view on Tokyo city, where I imagine my character Schweppes would love to reside.

Walls and floors

I started by making the wall, ceiling and floor panels from 4 mm thick MDF. To paint the walls I used acrylic paint applied with a sponge paint roller.

The purple nebula wall took me about a day to paint, it was quite a learning curve! I mainly used sponging techniques for the purple, blue and cloud parts and splattered the stars on as a finishing touch.

The floor is made with thick glitter gift wrap paper that I glued on.

After sticking all the silver stars on the ceiling, I decided to also install christmas lights as ‘stars’. Because the LED moon pendant light (which is actually a keychain) didn’t produce enough light in the diorama. By drilling holes in the ceiling I was able to install the lights. The effect when turning on the lights is stunning now!

The decoration of the left wall consists of miniature party banners in the shape of silver glittery stars (I also found these in the gift-wrap section). The ‘Everything starts with a dream’ poster consists of cardboard, clear plastic and popsicle sticks with glitter washi tape.

DIY Popsicle stick window frame

I made the wooden window frame for the galaxy room diorama in 1/6 scale by hand with craft sticks.
I started by cutting the flat and pointy ends off the bamboo satay skewers in an angle and gluing them together. With this, I made the inside frame.
The ‘glass’ is a piece of doll box plastic that has been glued to this inside frame.
Then I used jumbo popsicle sticks (or tongue depressors) to make the vertical frame. Finally, regular popsicle sticks make the flat top frame.

It’s easy to cut the edges in a 45 degree angle: to make sure your angles fit, use a geo triangle for measurement. After cutting, I stacked all frame parts on top of each other and sanded the edges all at once to make them smooth before gluing them together.

This is the frame right after assembly, but before painting with purple acrylic paint and decorating with galaxy themed washi tape.

Sci-fi and My Little Pony

The design of the galaxy room diorama in 1/6 scale is for my ball jointed doll Schweppes. Her character loves sci-fi, gaming and space… and My Little Pony!
She collects Star Wars and Star Trek memorabilia, as well as Doctor Who and more of her favorite science fiction movies and series.

Check out some of her awesome stuff: an R2-D2 droid and Star Wars figures and G1 and G4 My Little Pony toys.
The vintage astronaut Barbie was passed down to her by her mom and was actually the first thing in her life that inspired her love for space.
She’s saving up for her own telescope to watch the stars from her Tokyo apartment with.

DIY gamer desk 1/6 scale

Check out my tutorial for making the DIY gamer desk 1/6 scale! This wooden handmade desk has real metal support legs. Schweppes looks pretty please with it already, don’t you think?
